Also transcribed in black marker by an unknown inscriber in uppercase letters as printed text on strainer verso: FRANCIS
SFF.60 was primarily painted in 1948 while Francis was in school in Berkeley. The artist signed and dated the painting with a 1948 completion date, but it is believed he revisited the work in the fall of 1950, applying more paint on his arrival in Paris. A 1951 completion date was assigned to the painting when it was first published in the 1962 Galerie Benador exhibition catalogue, but this date was likely attached to the work when it was first sold in 1951.
The painting has been exhibited or reproduced with varying orientations.
